Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Lips Collection | Review

Hey Beauties...
Lip Crayons, or Chubby sticks, have taking the over the beauty world by storm over the past year or so, and the newest addition to the craze is Barry M's version, 'Gelly Hi-shine Lips' inspired by their famous glossy 'Gelly Hi-shine Nail Paints'. Now, its no secret I am a complete and utter lip junkie, I have issues I swear. Also I think its clear I am obsessed with Barry M, especially their Gelly Hi-Shine Nail paint collection. So when I read they were coming out with a new Gelly Hi-Shine collection for lips! I honestly was like a child at Christmas that got the puppy they always wanted! I just new I had to try them, and I knew I had to get the whole collection, (I have a weird obsession with collections haha!). Plus Barry M have a 3for2 offer on at the moment in Superdrug so it was fate to get the Collection and a cheeky Nail Paint!

Barry M claim:
"Soft, moisturising lip crayons in 5 hot shades; with their ultra-rich, highly pigmented formula, "Gelly Hi Shine Lips create an intense depth of colour with an unbelievable sheen."

The 5 'Hot' shades are

1. Vega
Barry M Gelly Lips - Vega | £4.99

Vega is a juicy, plum/berry colour, a shade I think will be perfect for the whole year round as I found this shade was a little sheer so can be lightly applied for the summer months for a juicy berry colour, and easily built up for a more deep wintery shade. I did notice the tiniest hint of a sweet scent, nothing distinct and you really have to smell for it.

2. Alpha
Barry M Gelly Lips - Alpha | £4.99

Alpha is what I would call a classic post box, orange red. This is more opaque then Vega and honestly I believe is summers answer to the very classic Red Lip. Again this can be lightly applied or built up depending on your preference. Also had the smallest hint of a sweet scent.

Barry M Gelly Lip - Electra | £4.99

Ooo how I love this shade! Electra is just like the name suggests is a gorgeous virbarent 'Electric' pink! The pigmentation on this gloss in particular is outstanding! I just love it! This has a gorgeous strong raspberry scent to it, which reminds me of summer and raspberry maoams.

Barry M Gelly Lips - Sirius | £4.99

Sirius is a more down to earth berry pink with a hint of coral, this is definitely the shade to go for if you want a more sophisticated look, or aren't brave enough for a bold lip. I would say this shade is pretty close to my natural lip colour just deeper and juicier. There is a very distinct strawberries and cream scent to this shade.

Barry M Gelly Lip - Capella | £4.99

Capella is another favourite of mine and is definitely a spring/summer shade if there ever was one. I do love a pink lip and this is the most stunning blue/pink. It did take me a while, as I was applying it, to work out where I had seen this colour before and then I realised it is a juicy and glossy dupe for MACs Pink Nouvou, with a major slash in the price tag too. This scent doesn't really smell of anything.

So my thoughts on these little beauties. Firstly the application is so effortless, the crayon just glides on the lips with precision, due to the shape of the crayon which I love. The formula is just beautiful, so creamy, moisturising and nourishing on the lips and doesn't dry your lips out throughout the day, leaving you with a gorgeous glossy shine. The product doesn't feel sticky or tacky at all and you only end up with minimal hair sticking to the lips if you have your hair down on a windy day, you will get some though.

The lasting power of the product, isn't the best, if I'm honest, but is still pretty good. The shine of the gloss fades after about 2-3 hours, or if you eat or drink. Then your left with a stunning, demi-stain on the lips, which still gives you moisture to the lips and looks lovely. I would say personally for me the stain then stays on my lips for a good possibly 4-5 hours after, before I either reapply or remove it. I would say these are more lasting then a 'Luster' from mac in the sense the colour is still visible on the lips even after food and drink, unless you wipe your mouth of course. But the formula of these are so desirable and addictive, I don't mind having to reapply more often and can over look that flaw.

As these are Lip crayons, the do need to be sharpened when the product runs down, rather then a twist. I'm not too sure how I feel about this as I think with sharpening you still get that point which makes it so easy to apply, which you perhaps wouldn't get with a twist up, although a twist up is less messy and some product does get wasted from sharpening.

Overall I absolutely love these and they will definitely be a staple in my make-up collection! You can find these online at which ship internationally or in many superdrug stores and online at for £4.99.

  3. How on earth do you sharpen these crayons?

    1. I just use a regular sharpener, it does get messy though but they do sharpen easily :)

  4. I got one of these yesterday and love it. Easier to sharpen if you pop it in the freezer for half an hour first. It soon goes soft again!
